In 1992, repeats of the classic 1960s puppet show Thunderbirds on BBC Two led to an unanticipated surge in demand for Tracy Island play sets in the run-up to Christmas. With retailers and manufacturers unable to meet the demand, Blue Peter stepped in to help, resulting in arguably the most famous and ambitious ‘make’ in the show’s history.
