I colorized, restored, and sound-designed these rare footage documenting daily life in IRAQ 1920s, capture a unique journey across Iraq in the 1920s, a period when the country was emerging as a modern state while preserving the deep heritage of Mesopotamia. From the sacred district of Kazmin in Baghdad—home to the golden-domed shrine of the Imams—to the holy cities of Kerbela, with the shrine of Imam Husayn, and Nedjef, resting place of Imam Ali, these locations have been central to the spiritual heart of Shi’a Islam for centuries. Nearby Hille, close to ancient Babylon, and Koufa, an early Islamic capital, reflect Iraq’s foundational religious and political history. In the south, Bassora flourished as a cosmopolitan port on the Shatt al-Arab, while El Ozeir preserved traditions tied to the prophet Ezra. In the fertile plains of northern Iraq, Mosul stood as a major cultural center, surrounded by ancient Assyrian sites such as Korsabad, Balawat, Baratella, and the vibrant communities of Bachika. Further north, the town of Mar Yakoub continued the region’s long Christian monastic tradition, and Samarra remained an architectural jewel of the Abbasid era with its unique spiral minaret. Together, these cities form a mosaic of civilizations, faiths, and cultures that shaped Iraq’s unique identity during the early 20th century.
