7. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Botti, Neue Nationalgalerie, curator of the exhibition:
“The sculpture is actually from 2001, so it’s not a recent one, but unfortunately it stays relevant in our times. And when he created it 20 years ago he wanted to make visible the absolute evil, so he chose this sculpture.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Botti, Neue Nationalgalerie, curator of the exhibition:
“What I admire about the sculpture, is that you come close to it and you see a small boy praying. And then you turn around and then suddenly you see the face of an adult man and it’s Adolf Hitler. But you don’t really know if he’s praying for forgiveness or not. It stays in between. So it has this power that it shakes you, but it’s not certainty.”

“So, Night, the title (of the exhibition) he chose because it’s a time where one comes down to reflect, to think, to pause, but it’s also a time of celebration and it’s, of course, also in terms of day and night, it’s the dark time, but it also guarantees that there will be a morning after.”

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Botti, Neue Nationalgalerie, curator of the exhibition:
“It’s maybe you could say the symbol of the 20th century, because it was the rise of fascism, of power, of authority, and then it collapsed. So it’s on the one hand these, also a reference to artistry, I mean, horses are always the symbol for nobility, for military, for winning. We see them in the city all over. We see it in paintings. But here it’s the opposite. It’s weak. It’s exhausted.”

22. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Botti, Neue Nationalgalerie, curator of the exhibition:
“On the one hand, it’s this emblem of the 20th century. But at the time when he created it, he also said it’s a self-portrait of himself, where he wanted to do everything he was in the age where he could do everything, but he simply couldn’t start the engine.”
