One of the most noteworthy lost kingdoms or states in European history which had an opportunity to change the dynamics of power on the continent was the often mentioned but seldom explored state of Burgundy, specifically the Duchy of Burgundy, whose lands were contested between between the still emerging and still centralizing Kingdom of France and Holy Roman Empire. The Duchy of Burgundy, under the leadership of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy, sought to emulate French centralization and establish a Burgundian Kingdom as a powerful and wealthy buffer-state between France and the HRE.
