STORYLINE:
Aid began to reach some survivors in Nepal on Friday following catastrophic flash floods that swept through the mountainous border region between Nepal and China.
The full scope of the devastation continued to emerge and survivors sought shelter at makeshift army relief centers.
In Nuwakot, one of the flood areas closest to Kathmandu, entire villages were swept away in minutes.
What remains is covered in sediment and thick mud. Broken pieces of a golden temple jut out from the sand, while the carcass of a dead buffalo lay on the ground.
With their homes destroyed, survivors gathered at roadside tea shops.
At a school in Nuwakot being used as a temporary aid distribution center, NGOs handed out solar panels, clothes and basic hygiene goods.
For Kanchi Nepali, the relief supplies were overwhelming.
“Now we don’t have food and shelter,” she said. “When we are hungry, we get to eat. We have no clothes and we get clothes. It is worth a lot for us.”
Those rescued from the area were taken to Maithali Barrack, a military training center in Nuwakot turned into a relief camp, where helicopters came and went with people and supplies.
Community members gathered at the perimeter, waiting to see if their loved ones would arrive on the next flight.
Bodies recovered from the flood zone were placed behind orange and green tarpaulin, where they stayed until identified.
Chanda Lal Chitrakar, 62, said he had ignored early flood warning messages on his phone, having lived through last year’s floods.
But this time, after about 45 minutes, he saw an enormous cascade of water rushing from the hills, reaching higher than the tallest tree near his home.
He ran with only the clothes he was wearing and his cellphone. “When I reached the top, only then did I feel like I could breathe,” he said.
Now sheltering at a relief center, Chitrakar reflected on his survival.
“I am old and half my life is already behind me. But surviving is itself a great thing, and I am grateful to have seen so much in my life and to see my relatives safe,” he said.
