1971: The Man Who Scratches for a Living | Look Stranger | BBC Archive
“I don’t feel ambitious at all… just to sit down and do me day’s scratching and fiddling about, pottering around. I’m not a tycoon – don’t think I ever will be.” Malcolm Appleby might be the most brilliant young engraver alive. Two years ago, Malcolm saw the potential in a secluded, derelict, Victorian railway station on Deeside near Balmoral. He is painstakingly repairing the dilapidated building, and converting it into a workshop – where he makes beautifully intricate handcrafted engravings – and a home that allows him to be surrounded by the nature which inspires him.
