1964: From Script to Screen – Making a Television Drama | Monitor | Making of…

BBC arts programme Monitor documents the various processes that go into creating a single television drama. In this instance, the drama is a play called “The Bedmakers” written by David Turner – which will be broadcast as part of the BBC’s First Night series of contemporary television dramas.

We follow the cast and crew as they take this production from its conception – when writer David Turner and director Alan Bridges meet for the first time, 16 weeks before transmission – to the moments immediately following broadcast. Over the course of those 16 weeks, a great production machine springs to life, encompassing both the technical – lights, camera, sound, set design and vision mixing – and the artistic – scripting, casting, rehearsals, costume and make-up.

Clip taken from Monitor, originally broadcast on BBC Television, 2 February, 1964.
